Plane spotting in Sweden: what you should know

Stockholm Arlanda handles most of Sweden’s air traffic. In the north of the country, winter tourism to Lapland brings charter traffic to airports that are otherwise rather quiet.

Photography from publicly accessible areas is allowed. Sweden’s right of public access (allemansrätten) lets you roam large areas of nature, but it doesn’t override the rules at the airport: fences, barriers and operational areas remain off-limits.

In summer the sun barely sets in the north, which allows unusual shooting times. In winter it’s the other way around: north of the Arctic Circle it stays twilight for weeks, but you get snow and, with luck, the northern lights.

Spotting hills & viewpoints

Artificial mounds and elevated viewpoints at the edge of the airport grounds. You shoot over the fence and have a clear view of runways and taxiways.

Aviation museums & exhibitions

Museums and exhibitions with historic and retired aircraft. Weather-proof, easy to plan and a chance to see types up close that stopped flying long ago.
