Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa as major airports, plus many holiday destinations from Lake Garda to Sicily – with heavy seasonal traffic in summer.
2 spots listed
Italy spreads its air traffic across many airports. Rome Fiumicino and Milan Malpensa handle most of the long-haul flights, and Malpensa is also an important cargo base. Then there are numerous leisure airports served in summer by charter and low-cost carriers from all over Europe.
Photography from publicly accessible areas is generally allowed. Some airports are also used by the military, though – restraint is a must there, and you don’t photograph military areas. Security staff react more sensitively to large lenses and tripods than north of the Alps.
The summer months are tricky for photography: harsh midday sun, haze and heat shimmer over the runways. The usable windows are early morning and late afternoon. April, May and October offer better light with traffic that is still busy.

Museo Storico dell’Aeronautica Militare in Vigna di Valle
Bracciano
On the shore of Lake Bracciano, where Italy’s first military airship rose in 1908, the Aeronautica Militare shows its history: Schneider racers by Macchi, the CANT Z.506 seaplane, S.M.79, Spitfire, Starfighter and the jets of the Frecce Tricolori in five aircraft halls. Here is how to plan your day at Vigna di Valle.
Volandia at Milan Malpensa Airport
Somma Lombardo
Italy’s big aviation museum stands in the old Caproni factory halls right next to Malpensa’s Terminal 1. Here you collect the DC-3, DC-9 and MD-80, Italian jets from the G.91 to the M-346 – and next door the long-haul and cargo jets take off.
