Plane spotting in Finland: what you should know

Helsinki-Vantaa is Finnair’s hub and by far the largest airport in the country. In winter, trips to Lapland bring extra charter traffic to the airports in the north.

Photography from publicly accessible areas is allowed. Finland’s right of public access (jokamiehenoikeus) gives you a lot of freedom in nature, but it doesn’t apply to airport grounds. Near the Russian border, restraint is advisable.

The short winter days and long summer nights shift the usable windows considerably. Snow and a low sun create special shots in winter, but they call for planning around sun position.
