Athens as the hub, plus island airports such as Skiathos, where leisure airlines pass extremely low over spectators’ heads in summer.

Greece’s air traffic is heavily shaped by tourism. Athens is the year-round center, while the island airports see peaks of leisure airlines from all over Europe in summer. Skiathos is known for its short runway and very low approaches.
Photography from publicly accessible areas is allowed. At airports shared with the military, restraint is a must. Where aircraft take off right behind fences, jet blast is a real danger – keep your distance.
In summer, the midday light is harsh and the air shimmers. The meltemi winds in the Aegean can fix the runway direction at the island airports for days.
Artificial mounds and elevated viewpoints at the edge of the airport grounds. You shoot over the fence and have a clear view of runways and taxiways.
Vantage points under the approach or at the runway threshold. Landing aircraft at low altitude and spectacular perspectives – but heavily dependent on the runway direction in use: with the wrong wind, nothing happens here.
Museums and exhibitions with historic and retired aircraft. Weather-proof, easy to plan and a chance to see types up close that stopped flying long ago.
The Planetrack spot map shows verified spots for each airport with directions, the best light and community ratings. Planetrack is launching soon – join the waitlist and get early access.
