9 airlines
Scheduled airlines with a hub and connecting flights – usually on short-, medium- and long-haul routes.
Brussels Airlines
SN / BEL
Belgium’s network airline with a hub in Brussels: born from the legacy of Sabena, in the Star Alliance since 2009, fully part of the Lufthansa Group since 2017 – and the group’s Africa specialist.
Sabena
SN / SAB
Belgium’s historic national airline from 1923 to 2001: Sabena flew from Brussels to Europe, North America and above all Africa – with the Caravelle, Boeing 707, 747 and finally Airbus A330 and A340, until bankruptcy in November 2001 ended it all.
Cheap point-to-point flights, often with a single-type fleet, many bases and short turnaround times.
Airlines focused on vacation destinations – in scheduled service and for tour operators.
Sobelair
Q7 / SLR
Defunct Belgian charter airline (1946–2004) based in Brussels: from Congo services with DC-3s and DC-4s and Sabena Caravelles to Boeing 737s and 767s for vacation flights to the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. It lasted just over two years after its parent Sabena ended, and collapsed in January 2004.
TUI fly Belgium
TB / JAF
The Belgian leisure airline of the TUI Group: formerly Jetairfly, now flying Boeing 737s and Embraer E195-E2s from Brussels, Ostend and Antwerp – with an ICAO code that still recalls the old name.
Short routes with turboprops and regional jets, often as feeders to the big hubs.
All-cargo airlines, cargo subsidiaries and express services with their own freighters.
Air Belgium
KF / ABB
The young Belgian airline launched in 2018 with used A340s from Charleroi to Hong Kong, later flew A330neos to the south and, after three failed passenger attempts, became a pure cargo airline under the CMA CGM umbrella.
ASL Airlines Belgium
3V / TAY
The former TNT Airways from Liège now flies for Ireland’s ASL group: 737 freighters in FedEx’s European night network and jumbo freighters on long-haul to China and North America.
Challenge Airlines (BE)
CHG
The Belgian cargo airline of the Challenge Group: Boeing 747-400 freighters with OO registrations, based at Liège cargo airport and flying since 2019 as the ACMI partner of its own group.
