Special liveries of German airlines: Lufthansa, Condor, Eurowings, TUIfly and more

Anniversary jets for Lufthansa’s centennial, Condor’s retro Airbus, Eurowings’ BVB aircraft and TUIfly’s colorful advertising era: an overview of special liveries of German airlines – with registrations, backgrounds and spotting tips.

Key takeaways

  • The registration is the key: Special liveries are tied to a single aircraft. If you know the registration, you can track exactly that aircraft – type or flight number alone are not enough.
  • Lufthansa celebrates its centennial in 2026: For the anniversary, according to fleet lists, several aircraft from the A320neo to the Boeing 787-9 wear anniversary designs, plus an A321 in a retro look.
  • Condor goes retro: The A320 D-AICH recalls the early 1960s with its design, joined by a breast cancer awareness livery and the Eintracht Frankfurt Airbus.
  • Eurowings flies the BVB: The A320 D-AEWM flies as the team aircraft of Borussia Dortmund, alongside destination and campaign designs.
  • Many designs are vinyl wraps: Advertising and campaign designs are often just stuck on and disappear again after months or a few years. What flies today can be gone tomorrow.

A Lufthansa jet with an anniversary design, a Condor Airbus in the look of the early sixties, the black-and-yellow BVB aircraft from Eurowings: special liveries of German airlines are among the most popular subjects at the fence. Because they usually sit on only a single aircraft, they are also hard to plan around. This overview shows you which special liveries are or were flying at Lufthansa, Condor, Eurowings, TUIfly and other German airlines, which categories exist and how to get them in front of your lens deliberately.

The short answer

Most special liveries in Germany are flown by Lufthansa – from Star Alliance jets and the retro Boeing 747-8 to the anniversary aircraft for the 100th anniversary in 2026. Condor has a retro A320, a breast cancer awareness Airbus and an Eintracht Frankfurt aircraft, Eurowings the team Airbus of Borussia Dortmund as well as destination and campaign designs. TUIfly was known for years for colorful advertising aircraft and today flies mainly hotel brand designs. Smaller leisure airlines such as Sundair, Marabu or Discover hardly rely on special paint schemes.

A warning up front: special liveries change constantly. The information in this article is based on publicly maintained fleet lists as of spring to summer 2026. Before you plan a trip around a specific design, check the registration on the day.

What kinds of special liveries exist

Before we get to individual airlines, a look at the categories is worthwhile. They help you estimate how long a design will probably fly.

Category Typical example How long it usually stays Painted or vinyl
Retro Lufthansa 747-8 D-ABYT, Condor A320 D-AICH often many years mostly fully painted
Anniversary Lufthansa “100 Years”, TUIfly “50 Years” one to several years both possible
Alliance Lufthansa’s Star Alliance jets many years painted
Sports / club BVB at Eurowings, Eintracht Frankfurt at Condor tied to the partnership both possible
Advertising / destination Hotel brands at TUIfly, “Salzburger Land” at Eurowings months to a few years often vinyl
Message Lovehansa, “FlyPink” at Condor varies both possible

How retro and anniversary designs work in general is described in the articles on retro liveries and anniversary liveries. The difference between stuck-on vinyl and real paint is explained in Vinyl or paint.

Lufthansa: the largest selection

Lufthansa is the first address for livery hunters in Germany. Since 2018 the airline has flown in its current design: white fuselage, dark blue tail, the crane on a dark blue instead of a yellow background. Against this calm backdrop, special paint schemes stand out especially.

100 years of Lufthansa

Deutsche Luft Hansa was founded in 1926, so in 2026 the group celebrates its centennial. According to the fleet list, several aircraft wear an anniversary design, including:

  • the Boeing 787-9 D-ABPU “Berlin” (since December 2025),
  • the A320neo D-AING “Kerpen” (since January 2026) and D-AIND “Unna” (since February 2026),
  • the Airbus A350-900 D-AIXL “Rostock” (since February 2026),
  • the A321neo D-AIEM “Hamm” with the design “A Century Since Takeoff” (since March 2026).

According to the same list, there is also the A321 D-AISZ, which has worn a retro livery since February 2026. Other long-haul jets have also received new paint in the anniversary year; details differ depending on the source, so we name only the well-documented aircraft here. The anniversary jets fly all over the network – you are most likely to see the short- and medium-haul aircraft at the hubs Frankfurt and Munich as well as on domestic routes.

Retro jumbo and milestones

A classic is the Boeing 747-8 D-ABYT, which has flown in a retro livery since March 2015. It picks up an earlier Lufthansa look and is a perennial favorite in spotter photos. Which 747 variants exist and how to recognize the Boeing 747-8 is explained in the guide Identifying Boeing 747 variants.

Also a 747-8 is D-ABYP “Nordrhein-Westfalen”, which has been marked as the 1,500th Boeing 747 built since June 2014. The A321neo D-AIEQ “Münster” has commemorated Lufthansa’s 600th Airbus aircraft since May 2023.

Star Alliance, Lovehansa and Help Alliance

Lufthansa is a founding member of Star Alliance and flies several aircraft in the alliance livery. According to the fleet list, these include the A319 D-AIBH, D-AIBI and D-AIBJ, the A320s D-AIUA, D-AIZH, D-AIZM and D-AIZN and the A340-300 D-AIGN, D-AIGP and D-AIGV. How the alliance designs of Star Alliance, oneworld and SkyTeam differ is shown in the article Alliance liveries.

With a social message flies the A320neo D-AINY “Lingen”, in the Lovehansa design in rainbow colors since June 2022. The A321neo D-AIEP has worn a Help Alliance design, the group’s aid organization, since December 2024. You will find more on such designs under Pride liveries.

Past Lufthansa designs

For the 2014 FIFA World Cup, part of the fleet appeared as “Fanhansa”, and after the five-star award from Skytrax in 2017, an A320 and a 747-8 received “5 Starhansa” titles. Both campaigns were time-limited and are history today.

Lufthansa Cargo

The freight subsidiary Lufthansa Cargo also relies on special paint schemes. According to the fleet list, the Boeing 777F D-ALFI has worn the design “Cargo Human Care” since October 2020, and D-ALFG a design on “Sharkskin Technology” since October 2023. Earlier campaigns ran on MD-11Fs and other 777Fs, such as “100 Years Air Cargo” or a farewell design for the MD-11. You catch freighters mainly in Frankfurt, often at off-peak times.

Condor: retro “Hans” and five stripes

At Condor, even the standard livery is eye-catching: since April 2022 the aircraft have worn colored stripes in five variants – sunshine yellow, red, blue, green and beige, internally called Sunshine, Passion, Sea, Island and Beach. For collectors that means: even without a special livery, Condor offers five different looks.

According to the fleet list, Condor currently wears genuine special liveries on three Airbus A320s:

  • D-AICH, nicknamed “Hans”: a retro design in the style of the early 1960s since April 2019.
  • D-AICS: the “Breast Cancer Awareness” livery, also called “FlyPink”, since September 2024, as a sign for breast cancer screening.
  • D-ASGE: in the design of Eintracht Frankfurt since October 2025. Further club aircraft are presented in the article Football and sports special liveries.

Condor classics that no longer fly

Condor has a long tradition of special designs, many of which have since disappeared. The Boeing 757-300 D-ABON “Willi” wore a livery for the 50th company anniversary from 2006 until its retirement in October 2025. The Boeing 767-300ER D-ABUM “Achim” flew from 2012 to 2022 in a retro design of the 1980s. As early as the 1990s, the artist James Rizzi painted the 757-200 D-ABNF as the “Rizzi Bird” for the 40th anniversary – today a piece of livery history you can only find in archive photos. More such art projects are shown in Art on aircraft.

Eurowings: BVB and campaigns

Eurowings has been a partner of Borussia Dortmund again since 2016 and has flown a specially designed BVB Airbus ever since. The A320 D-AEWM has flown as the BVB’s “team Airbus” since February 2025; before that it wore a BVB fan design from 2022 to 2025. An earlier BVB A320, D-AIZR, was in service from 2016 to 2022.

According to the fleet list, there are also:

  • the A320 D-AEWP with the design “Salzburger Land” (since September 2023),
  • the A320neo D-AENE with “Yes to Europe” (since April 2024),
  • the A321neo D-AEEA in the design “Eurowings Holidays” (since September 2025),
  • several A320neos with campaign designs like “#makechangefly” or “Premium BIZ inside”.

Typical of Eurowings: advertising and destination designs changed frequently in recent years. Earlier designs like “Europa-Park”, “Croatia full of life” or rental car advertising have since disappeared, and quite a few of the aircraft concerned now fly with Maltese 9H registrations for Eurowings Europe. How to follow such re-registrations is covered under Re-registrations.

TUIfly: from gummy bears to hotel brands

Hardly any German airline has put as many advertising aircraft in the air as TUIfly. Between about 2007 and the end of the 2010s, Boeing 737s flew with designs for Haribo Goldbears and Tropifrutti, Bärenmarke, Deutsche Bahn (ICE and Regio), Hannover 96, the ARD television lottery, CEWE photo book and Nuremberg Airport, among others. Many of them had wordplay names like “HaribAIR” or “GlücksbringAIR”.

Today it is quieter. According to the fleet list, the pure Boeing 737 fleet still wears these designs:

Registration Type Design Since
D-ATUZ Boeing 737-800 RIU Hotels & Resorts February 2016
D-ABKM Boeing 737-800 TUI BLUE May 2021
D-ABKN Boeing 737-800 Robinson Club May 2021
D-AMAH Boeing 737 MAX 8 “50 Years” May 2024

According to the list, the “CEWE photo book” design on D-ABMV ended in November 2025. If you want to tell the 737 MAX 8 from the 737-800, you will find the features in the guide Telling Boeing 737 generations apart.

Leisure aircraft on weekends

TUIfly, Condor and other leisure airlines fly many destinations only on certain days of the week and more often in summer than in winter. Saturday is especially busy at many holiday airports – a good chance to catch a special design if it happens to be in rotation.

Discover, Sundair, Marabu and others

The smaller airlines hardly rely on special liveries:

  • Discover Airlines flew an A320 with a sticker for the inflight entertainment program from spring 2024 to early 2025. More interesting is the change from the former Eurowings Discover design to its own look: the phasing-out A330-200s were not repainted; only the Eurowings titles were removed from them.
  • Sundair had a special paint scheme in service from 2020 to 2025 with the A320 D-ANNA and the design “Katta macht Urlaub” (“Ring-tailed lemur goes on vacation”). Since late 2024 the fleet has flown in the design of majority owner Schauinsland.
  • Marabu Airlines flies with Estonian ES registrations and is listed in common fleet overviews without special designs.

Such changes between the old and new brand worlds are a collecting area of their own. What to watch for with mixed forms is explained in the article Recognizing hybrid liveries; how airlines switch their design completely is shown in When airlines change their design.

How to spot German special liveries deliberately

A special livery is tied to exactly one registration. That makes the search plannable if you proceed systematically.

1. Note the registration

Write down the registration of the design, such as D-ABYT or D-AICH. Type and airline alone do not help, because most of the fleet flies in the standard design.

2. Check the current rotation

Enter the registration in a flight tracker. The instructions are under Tracking an aircraft by registration.

3. Check runway direction in use and light

If the aircraft is coming, runway direction and sun position decide the picture. Plan the spot accordingly.

4. Be at the spot in time

Rotations change at short notice. Better to arrive a bit early and keep an eye on the live data.

For Lufthansa designs, Frankfurt and Munich are the best places to go. In Frankfurt, the Zeppelinheim viewing platform offers a good view of landings, in Munich the visitors’ hill (Besucherhügel). You often see Eurowings designs in Düsseldorf, Cologne/Bonn or Hamburg, for example from the Düsseldorf Airport observation deck. Condor has its home airport in Frankfurt but also flies from many other German airports. You will find general search tips in the guide Finding special liveries.

Ready for the livery hunt?

Check off what you have prepared.

  • I know the registration of the design I want to see.
  • I have checked whether the livery is still current.
  • I know which route the aircraft is on today.
  • I have checked runway direction in use and sun position at the spot.
  • I have a plan B in case the rotation is swapped at short notice.

What to watch out for

  • Fleet lists are snapshots. Designs are removed, aircraft change operators or are retired. What is written here may have changed since press time.
  • Vinyl is not forever. Stuck-on advertising often disappears after a few months. If such a design appeals to you, do not wait too long.
  • Aircraft get swapped. Airlines rearrange rotations at short notice. A design planned to Hamburg in the morning may fly to Vienna in the evening.
  • Document your sightings. A properly labeled photo with registration and date is worth its weight in gold later when the design has disappeared. How to go about it is in Collecting and documenting special liveries.
  • Stay on public areas. Even for the rarest design, the same applies: do not enter restricted areas. What is allowed is summarized in Is plane spotting allowed?.

A look across the border

Once you have ticked off the German designs, neighboring countries offer further targets. Austrian, Swiss and Edelweiss have retro and anniversary designs of their own, which the article Special liveries in Austria and Switzerland presents. And if you want to know which designs have made aviation history, drop by the legendary airline liveries.

Conclusion

German airlines offer an astonishing range of special liveries. Lufthansa provides the largest selection with anniversary jets, Star Alliance aircraft, Lovehansa and the retro 747. Condor scores with retro charm and a club aircraft, Eurowings with the BVB Airbus, and TUIfly keeps the tradition of brand aircraft alive with hotel designs. Because much changes quickly, it pays to chase designs promptly and document every sighting properly.

In short

If you want to collect special liveries of German airlines, you work with registrations rather than types: pick out the design, note the registration, check the rotation, head to the right spot. The anniversary jets for Lufthansa’s centennial are the most obvious target in 2026.

Summary

  • Special liveries of German airlines can be roughly divided into anniversary, retro, alliance, sports, advertising and message designs.
  • Lufthansa has the largest selection: Star Alliance jets, the Lovehansa design, the retro 747-8 D-ABYT and, since late 2025, several anniversary aircraft for the 100th anniversary.
  • Condor, Eurowings and TUIfly have flown many advertising designs in recent years – a large share of them is now history because vinyl was removed or aircraft were retired.
  • To spot them deliberately you need the registration, a flight tracker and some patience, because individual aircraft are deployed freely in the rotation.

Frequently asked questions

Which German airline has the most special liveries?

Lufthansa by far. Besides several Star Alliance liveries on A319, A320 and A340-300, it flies the Lovehansa design, the retro Boeing 747-8 D-ABYT and – for the 100th anniversary in 2026 – several anniversary aircraft. Condor, Eurowings and TUIfly each have a handful of current designs.

What exactly is a special livery?

Any paint scheme that departs from the airline’s standard design: retro designs, anniversary designs, alliance liveries, sports and club aircraft, advertising designs for partners or destinations and liveries with a social message. Some are fully painted, others consist of large-area vinyl.

How do I find out where a specific special livery is flying right now?

Via the registration. Enter it in a flight tracker, and you see the current and often also the next rotations. Because airlines deploy their aircraft freely across the network, this changes daily – a notification on approach or landing is therefore more convenient than constantly checking.

Is the Lufthansa retro 747 still flying?

The Boeing 747-8 D-ABYT has worn the retro livery since March 2015 and is still listed with this design in fleet lists. Deployment and paint can change at any time, though, so check the current status by registration before a targeted trip.

What became of the colorful TUIfly advertising aircraft?

Most are history. Designs like Haribo Goldbears, Bärenmarke, Deutsche Bahn or Hannover 96 flew between about 2007 and 2018 and were painted over afterward. According to the fleet list, TUIfly currently still flies hotel designs like RIU, TUI BLUE and Robinson, as well as a Boeing 737 MAX 8 with the “50 Years” titles.

Why do special liveries disappear so quickly?

Advertising and campaign designs are tied to contracts and often applied as vinyl that is removed when the term ends. Others end with the aircraft’s retirement or at the next scheduled repaint. Retro and anniversary designs, by contrast, often stay for several years.
